Difficulty withholding urination, also known as postpartum incontence, will cause urine to come out when you laugh, sneeze, cough, run, or lift heavy objects.

Cause of difficulty holding back urination after childbirth

The cause of the difficulty holding back urination after childbirth is not known with certainty. Some claimed that this happened because of an injury during childbirth, which caused damage to the tissue around the urinary tract. But there are also those who argue that it is caused by changes in urinary tract muscles during pregnancy. Although the cause is uncertain, there are several conditions that are known to increase the risk of difficulty holding back urination after childbirth, namely obesity during pregnancy, giving birth normally or with the help of forceps and vacuum, having gestational diabetes, and having been pregnant and giving birth before.

How to Overcome Difficulties Withstand urination After Childbirth

Complaints difficult to hold back urination after childbirth usually will improve by itself. However, Mother can also overcome them in the following ways:

1. Perform Kegel exercises regularly

The first way you can do to overcome the difficulty holding back urination after childbirth is routine Kegel exercises. If done routinely and in the right way, Kegel exercises can strengthen the pelvic floor muscles and make Mother easier to control urination. Here are the steps to do Kegel exercises:
  • Lie down with knees bent and legs open.
  • Make a motion to hold urine or hold fart by tightening the muscles in the vagina and urethra, then hold for 10 seconds.
  • After that, relax the muscles around the vagina and urethra for 10 seconds, before starting to tighten it again.
  • Repeat this movement 10 times.

2. Hold the bladder just before urinating

When the urge to urinate arises, as much as possible hold for a while for about 15 minutes. This is to train the muscles around the urinary tract, so that urination can be more controlled. Mothers can also cross their legs to tighten the pelvic muscles when sneezing or coughing, so as to prevent unwitting urination.

3. Sufficient fluid needs every day

Mother may think that one way to overcome the difficulty holding back urination is to limit your intake of water. This is wrong, mom. Mother must still meet the needs of fluids by drinking water at least 8 glasses per day.

4. Limit foods or drinks that contain caffeine

After giving birth, you should still limit your consumption of caffeinated, carbonated foods and drinks that have a spicy taste. These foods or drinks can trigger urination more often. To prevent difficulty urinating after giving birth, Mother can do yoga for pregnant women, meet fluid needs, consume foods rich in fiber, and prevent excessive weight gain during pregnancy. If Mother is still difficult to resist urinating despite doing some of the above, do not hesitate to consult a doctor to get the right treatment.
